Still I Rise by Herschell Turner

ArtPrize 2010 has come to its conclusion. Herschell Turner wishes to thank all the folks who visited and voted for his artwork which was hanging from September 22 through October 10, 2010 at the WMCAT
(West Michigan Center for Arts & Technology).

Laser prints, open edition Giclée prints, and limited edition Giclée prints are now available for order!

The work is a mini mural using mixed medium on canvas, and depicts the perseverance of the black man’s struggle in the mainstream of American History.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

From living peacefully back home in the cities and villages of West Africa, millions of humans were transported by force to the shores of North America. Enslaved and worked until death took them away, these Africans submitted to untold cruelties for over 200 years.

Upon being taught the message of the Bible, some determined that they would see freedom and justice from their captors. Thus, we had rebellions, then the Underground Railroad, where some Blacks, with the aid of some Whites escaped. Black Codes and Jim Crow laws ensued and justice eluded the formerly enslaved.

The quest for justice went to the courts and the administrative system, where laws finally were passed to try and ensure justice for Blacks. Today, a Black is the head of this nation, yet justice still eludes the majority of Black Americans after 399 years. Where is the love? Where is the justice?
